‘Marco Polo’ returns to Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen for renewal project
‘Marco Polo’, a Global Maritime owned cruise ship operated by Cruise and Maritime Voyages, was at Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen between 3 November and 14 December 2015 for her 10th special survey and a number of refurbishments. The visit marked the 800 passenger cruise vessel’s third visit to the Vlissingen yard in the Netherlands’ south-west.
Whilst docked in the yards covered hall, the ‘Marco Polo’ underwent a considerable programme of refurbishment which saw tasks being carried out by both the client and Damen, all while the crew remained living onboard. The ship was able operate on her own generator set during her stay in the covered dock by connecting the funnel via a pipe system to the outside. Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen has completed a significant number of cruise projects and is well used to handling the logistical demands of coordinating such programmes of renovation.
The client handled the interior scope of the work, replacing seating, tables, small band piping in cabins, and a number of windows and renewing the Jacuzzis. The client also replaced all lifeboats and lifeboat davits, ensuring the vessel was fully in keeping with all associated safety regulations.
Damen’s scope focused on the technical aspects of the project and encompassed such things as overhauling the air coolers, main and auxiliary engines, propeller shafts and bearings, rudders, capstans and windlasses. Additionally, the brake lining, a number of windlass bearings and the rudder were renewed.
Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen also repainted the vessel – the hull in blue and the accommodation white – a task for which the yard’s covered dock proved enormously useful.
Wim van der Velde, Project Manager at Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen for the ‘Marco Polo’ project said, “It has been a pleasure to welcome the ‘Marco Polo’ back to the yard. We enjoy a very good relationship with the client, who operates a number of vessels, the majority of which dock within the Damen Shiprepair & Conversion group of repair yards. The ‘Astor’ and ‘Marco Polo’ usually in Vlissingen and the ‘Magellan’ at Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam.”
